Science

At The Beaulieu Park Primary School, our science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop a passion for discovery and help children make sense of the world around them. Through a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum, pupils build a secure understanding of scientific concepts while developing the skills needed to think and work like scientists.

Science is taught through the key disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, while also developing pupils' understanding of Earth science, sustainability and the environment. Children explore fascinating aspects of the world, from the human body and living things to forces, materials, space and the wider universe. As they progress through the school, their knowledge deepens and expands, enabling them to make meaningful connections between different areas of learning.

Our curriculum is built on the principle that knowledge should be taught in a logical sequence and revisited over time. This approach helps children secure important scientific knowledge, deepen their understanding and retain what they have learned. As pupils revisit key concepts throughout their primary years, they develop a rich scientific vocabulary and gain increasing confidence in explaining their thinking using precise language.

Alongside developing scientific knowledge, pupils learn how scientists investigate and discover new information. They are given opportunities to observe, question, classify, identify patterns, carry out fair tests, research using secondary sources and interpret data. Importantly, children first develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts before applying their knowledge through enquiry and investigation. This ensures that practical work deepens understanding rather than simply demonstrating a process.

Children also learn about the contributions of significant scientists from a range of backgrounds and periods in history. Through this, they come to understand how scientific knowledge has developed over time and continues to shape our lives today and in the future.

By the time pupils leave The Beaulieu Park Primary School, they will have developed a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, an understanding of how science works as a discipline, and a lasting curiosity about the world. We aim for all children to leave primary school equipped with the confidence, skills and enthusiasm needed to continue their scientific learning and make informed decisions about the world around them.
