History

At The Beaulieu Park Primary School, our history curriculum is designed to develop curious, knowledgeable and reflective young historians. Through a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum, children gain a secure understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world, enabling them to make sense of how historical events, people and ideas have shaped the society we live in today.

Our curriculum is built around a clear chronological framework, allowing pupils to develop a secure understanding of historical periods and how they connect across time. Rather than studying isolated topics, children encounter history as a continuous story, building their knowledge year by year and making meaningful links between different events, civilisations and periods. This approach helps pupils understand how and why significant changes have occurred throughout history.

Alongside learning key historical knowledge, children develop an understanding of important historical concepts such as monarchy, empire, civilisation, democracy and equality. They also learn to think like historians by exploring evidence, considering different interpretations of the past and investigating questions about cause and consequence, continuity and change, similarity and difference, and historical significance.

Each year, pupils study important aspects of British history, including major turning points that have shaped the nation. They explore how developments such as the growth of monarchy, the Magna Carta, the British Empire, industrialisation and the World Wars have influenced life in Britain. Children are encouraged to make connections between national events and their local area, helping them understand how history has shaped the community around them.

In addition to British history, pupils investigate the history of the wider world. They study ancient civilisations, empires, world-changing events and significant individuals from a diverse range of cultures and time periods. From Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece to Baghdad, the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle for equality, children develop an appreciation of the achievements, experiences and challenges of people throughout history.

Historical enquiry is an important part of our curriculum. Children learn how historians use sources to build an understanding of the past and recognise that interpretations of history can differ. As their knowledge grows, pupils become increasingly confident in analysing evidence, asking thoughtful questions and constructing their own informed viewpoints about historical events and issues.

By the time pupils leave The Beaulieu Park Primary School, they will have developed a secure understanding of local, British and world history, an appreciation of how the past influences the present and the skills to think critically about historical evidence and interpretations. We aim for every child to leave with a lasting interest in history, a strong sense of perspective and a deeper understanding of their place in the story of humanity.
