School attendance and the law

The law entitles every child of compulsory school age to an efficient, full-time education suitable to their age, aptitude, and any special educational need they may have. It is the legal responsibility of every parent to make sure their child receives that education either by attendance at a school or by education otherwise than at a school. Where parents decide to have their child registered at school, they have an additional legal duty to ensure their child attends that school regularly. This means their child must attend every day that the school is open, except in a small number of allowable circumstances such as being too ill to attend or being given permission for an absence in advance from the school.

If your child is absent

Primary

You must report your child’s absence through the study bugs app for each day your child is absent from school. If we are not informed of your child’s absence, we will contact you in order to ensure their safety and confirm the reason for their absence.

Secondary

Contact us on the first day of absence before 8:00 am. We have an answer phone available to leave a message if nobody is available to take your call, or you may email the student attendance inbox. You must also contact the school on every further day of absence, again before 8:00am. If we are not informed of your child’s absence, we will contact you in order to ensure their safety and confirm the reason for their absence.

If your child arrives late

Primary

When arriving late, students must enter through the primary school doors and sign in.

Secondary

If a student arrives late they must enter through the main office doors. If they arrive between 08:35am and 08:40am, their conduct card will be signed. If a student arrives later than 08:40am they will be asked to sign in and may be sanctioned.

Leave of absences and leave during the school day

Primary

If possible, appointments (e.g. an orthodontic, dental, or hospital) should be made out of school hours or during the school holidays. Where this cannot be arranged, we ask that evidence such as a letter or appointment card is sent to the primary school inbox.

For absences that are not appointments (e.g. a funeral or wedding) a leave of absence request form must be completed prior to the absence and sent to the primary school inbox or handed into the office. This will then be reviewed by the Head Teacher and you will be informed if it has been authorised or unauthorised. If a leave of absence is unauthorised, you may be fined.
